The short answer: you can know you are saved because God has promised it, not because you feel it. "Whoever has the Son has life" (1 John 5:12, ESV). If you have turned from sin and trusted Jesus, who died for your sins and rose again, God's Word says you have eternal life. The Holy Spirit confirms it inside you, and a changing life shows it outwardly. Doubts are common. When they come, go back to what Jesus did and what God has promised.
God Wants You to Know
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.
That is 1 John 5:13, ESV. John did not write so believers would hope or guess. He wrote so they would know. Assurance is not arrogance. It is taking God at His word.
Assurance Rests on Jesus, Not on You
Salvation is a gift received by faith, not a reward earned by being good enough. "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast" (Ephesians 2:8–9, ESV). If salvation depended on your performance, you could never be sure. Because it depends on Jesus' finished work, you can be.
The Bible states the promise plainly: "if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9, ESV). See what grace means.
Three Ways God Gives Assurance
- The promises of His Word. "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life" (John 5:24, ESV). Your assurance starts with what God has said.
- The witness of the Holy Spirit. "The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God" (Romans 8:16, ESV). See who the Holy Spirit is.
- The evidence of a changed life. "And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments" (1 John 2:3, ESV). Not perfection, but a new direction: a love for God, a hatred of sin, a love for His people, and a desire to obey.
Can I Lose My Salvation?
Christians have discussed this question for centuries. What Scripture makes very clear is how secure Jesus' people are in His hands: "I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand" (John 10:28, ESV). Paul was sure "that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:6, ESV). Nothing in all creation "will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:39, ESV).
The Bible also calls people to "examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith" (2 Corinthians 13:5, ESV). Saying a prayer once while living with no interest in Jesus is not the same as trusting Him. Real faith keeps coming back to Him.
What to Do When Doubts Come
- Look at Jesus, not your feelings. Feelings rise and fall. The cross and the empty tomb do not change.
- Go back to the promises. Read 1 John 5:11–13, John 10:27–29, and Romans 8 slowly.
- Confess sin quickly. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, ESV). Sin can cloud assurance. Confession clears the air.
- Remember there is no condemnation. "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1, ESV).
- Stay close to His people. Talk with a pastor or mature believer. Doubts grow in isolation.
- If you are not sure you have ever trusted Jesus, do it now. Turn from your sin and put your trust in Him. See Know Jesus.
On the Street
When someone prays to receive Jesus on an outreach night, one of the first things we do is open the Bible with them and show them what God has promised, often 1 John 5:13. We want their confidence to rest on His Word, not on our enthusiasm or on how they feel that night. See when someone wants to say yes.
Common Questions
How can I know I am saved? If you have turned from sin and trusted Jesus as the Lord who died for your sins and rose again, God's Word says you have eternal life (1 John 5:11–13, Romans 10:9). The Holy Spirit confirms it inside you (Romans 8:16), and a changing life shows it (1 John 2:3).
What does the Bible say about assurance of salvation? 1 John 5:13 says believers may know they have eternal life. Jesus said His sheep will never perish and no one will snatch them out of His hand (John 10:28), and Romans 8:1 says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Why do I doubt my salvation? Doubts can come from feelings, unconfessed sin, hard seasons, or focusing on your own performance instead of Jesus' finished work. Go back to God's promises, confess sin, and talk with a mature believer.
Can I lose my salvation? Christians have discussed this for centuries, but Scripture is clear that Jesus holds His people securely (John 10:28, Philippians 1:6, Romans 8:38–39). The Bible also calls everyone to examine whether they are truly trusting Him (2 Corinthians 13:5).
Not how you feel. What He did, and what He promised.
