Who Is the Holy Spirit? What the Bible Says — cover image

The Holy Spirit is God, the third person of the Trinity, sent to live in every believer. Who He is, what He does, and how to walk with Him day by day.

Key takeaways

  • The Holy Spirit is God, the third person of the Trinity: a person, not a force (Matthew 28:19, Acts 5:4).
  • He convicts, gives new life, lives in believers, guides into truth, helps us pray, grows His fruit, and gives gifts.
  • Ask, keep being filled (Ephesians 5:18), walk by the Spirit, stay in the Word, and step out in witness (Acts 1:8).

The short answer: the Holy Spirit is God, the third person of the Trinity with the Father and the Son. He is not a force or a feeling but a person. Jesus promised to send Him as the Helper. He brings people to new birth, lives in every believer, teaches and guides them into truth, makes them more like Jesus, gives gifts to serve others, and empowers them to share the gospel.

The Holy Spirit Is God

The Bible speaks of one God in three persons. Jesus sent His disciples to baptize "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19, ESV), one name shared by three persons. When Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit, Peter told him, "You have not lied to man but to God" (Acts 5:4, ESV).

The Holy Spirit Is a Person

Scripture speaks of the Spirit as someone, not something. He teaches (John 14:26), He helps and intercedes (Romans 8:26), and He can be grieved: "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption" (Ephesians 4:30, ESV).

Jesus Promised the Helper

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth.

That is John 14:16–17, ESV. Jesus said the Spirit "will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you" (John 14:26, ESV). The same Spirit who was with the first disciples is with believers today.

What Does the Holy Spirit Do?

  • He convicts. He shows people their need for God: "he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment" (John 16:8, ESV).
  • He gives new life. Jesus said we must be "born of the Spirit" (John 3:6–8). See what it means to be born again.
  • He lives in believers. "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?" (1 Corinthians 6:19, ESV).
  • He seals and assures. Believers are "sealed with the promised Holy Spirit" (Ephesians 1:13, ESV), and "the Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God" (Romans 8:16, ESV).
  • He teaches and guides. "When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth" (John 16:13, ESV). See how to hear God's voice.
  • He helps us pray. "The Spirit himself intercedes for us" (Romans 8:26, ESV).
  • He makes us like Jesus. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law" (Galatians 5:22–23, ESV).
  • He gives gifts. "To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good" (1 Corinthians 12:7, ESV).
  • He empowers witness. "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses" (Acts 1:8, ESV).

How to Walk With the Holy Spirit

  • Ask. Jesus said the Father will "give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him" (Luke 11:13, ESV).
  • Be filled, again and again. "Be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18, ESV). In the original language it is an ongoing command: keep being filled.
  • Walk by the Spirit. "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh" (Galatians 5:16, ESV). Follow His leading in daily choices.
  • Stay in the Word. The Spirit inspired Scripture and never contradicts it.
  • Respond quickly. When He convicts you, confess. When He prompts you to love or speak, obey.
  • Use your gifts to serve. Gifts are for building others up, not for showing off.
  • Step out in witness. His power is given for mission. See how to overcome fear of sharing your faith.

Why This Matters on Mission

We do not go into the streets, parks, and festivals in our own strength. Jesus told His disciples to wait for the Spirit before they went (Acts 1:4–8). Every outreach night starts with asking Him to lead us, give us love for people, and open hearts to Jesus. He is the one who convicts and draws people. Our job is to be faithful witnesses.

Common Questions

Who is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is God, the third person of the Trinity with the Father and the Son (Matthew 28:19). He is a person, not a force, and Jesus promised to send Him as the Helper who would be with believers forever (John 14:16–17).

What does the Holy Spirit do? He convicts people of sin, gives new life, lives in believers, assures them they belong to God, guides them into truth, helps them pray, produces the fruit of the Spirit, gives gifts to serve, and empowers them to be Jesus' witnesses (John 16:8–13, Galatians 5:22–23, Acts 1:8).

Does every Christian have the Holy Spirit? Yes. The Bible says believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit when they hear the gospel and believe (Ephesians 1:13) and that their bodies are His temple (1 Corinthians 6:19). Believers are also told to keep being filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).

How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit? Ask God for His Spirit (Luke 11:13), confess sin quickly, stay in His Word, follow His leading in daily choices, and step out in obedience and witness. Being filled is an ongoing walk, not a one-time event (Ephesians 5:18, Galatians 5:16).

Not a force. A person. God with us, sending us.
