The short answer: almost everyone feels afraid to share their faith, including the apostle Paul. You overcome that fear not by waiting for it to disappear, but by praying for boldness, going with a partner, preparing a few simple words, and remembering that the results belong to God. Start small: one prayer, one question, one story. Courage grows when you use it.
You Are Not the Only One Who Is Afraid
Paul, who preached across the Roman world, told the Corinthians, "I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling" (1 Corinthians 2:3, ESV). He asked the church to pray for him, "that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel" (Ephesians 6:19, ESV). If Paul needed prayer for boldness, you are in good company.
Fear is not a sign that you are doing it wrong. It is often a sign that something matters.
What Are People Actually Afraid Of?
- Rejection. "What if they say no, or laugh?"
- Not knowing the answers. "What if they ask something I can't answer?"
- Saying it wrong. "What if I mess up the message?"
- Damaging a relationship. "What if it makes things weird with my friend or my family?"
- Looking foolish. "What will people think of me?"
Scripture speaks to that last one directly: "The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe" (Proverbs 29:25, ESV).
What the Bible Says About Fear and Boldness
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
That is 2 Timothy 1:7, ESV. Boldness is not a personality type. It is something God gives. When the first believers were threatened, they did not pray for safety. They prayed, "grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness" (Acts 4:29, ESV). And people noticed: when the leaders "saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus" (Acts 4:13, ESV).
Love helps too. "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear" (1 John 4:18, ESV). The more you care about the person in front of you, the less room there is to worry about yourself.
Seven Practical Ways to Get Past the Fear
- Pray for boldness, specifically. Ask God for courage and for one open door this week. Pray for people by name.
- Go with a partner. Jesus sent His disciples out in twos (Luke 10:1). Fear shrinks when you are not alone. See before you get out of the car.
- Prepare a few words. Know your story in two minutes and the gospel in four sentences. Preparation turns panic into readiness. See tell your story in two minutes and the gospel in four sentences.
- Start with a question, not a speech. "Can I pray for you about anything?" is one of the easiest openings there is. See how to pray with someone in sixty seconds.
- Let "I don't know" be okay. You do not need every answer. "That's a great question. I don't know, but I'd love to find out with you" is honest and disarming.
- Remember whose job the results are. "I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth" (1 Corinthians 3:6, ESV). Your part is faithfulness, not outcomes.
- Debrief and try again. After a conversation, talk it through with your partner, thank God, and write down what you learned. See how to debrief a Friday night.
What If It Goes Badly?
Sometimes it will. Someone will say no, walk away, or get angry. That is not failure; it is part of the work. Jesus told His followers what to say would be given to them when it mattered (Matthew 10:19–20), and He promised, "I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20, ESV). If a conversation turns heated, there is wisdom in when someone is angry. Then go again. Courage is a muscle.
Common Questions
Why am I afraid to share my faith? Most people fear rejection, not knowing answers, saying it wrong, or damaging a relationship. Those fears are normal. Even Paul spoke "in weakness and in fear and much trembling" (1 Corinthians 2:3).
What Bible verse helps with fear of evangelism? 2 Timothy 1:7: "for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control." Acts 4:29 shows the early church praying for boldness, and 1 John 4:18 says perfect love casts out fear.
How can I be bolder in sharing the gospel? Pray for boldness, go with a partner, prepare your two-minute story and a simple gospel explanation, start with questions or an offer to pray, and leave the results to God.
What if someone asks a question I can't answer? Be honest: say you don't know and offer to find out together. You are a witness to what Jesus has done, not an expert on everything.
Afraid and going anyway. That is courage.
