The short answer: you know God's will mostly by knowing God. Much of His will is already written in Scripture: love Him, love people, live a holy life, give thanks, and make disciples. For specific decisions, seek His kingdom first, ask Him for wisdom, check your options against the Bible, listen to wise counsel, and take the next faithful step. God guides people who are walking, not people who are waiting for a perfect sign.
Start With What God Has Already Said
People often look for God's will in the big unknowns: which job, which city, which person. But the Bible states much of God's will plainly:
- Holiness. "For this is the will of God, your sanctification" (1 Thessalonians 4:3, ESV).
- Joy, prayer, and gratitude. "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18, ESV).
- Justice, kindness, humility. "And what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8, ESV).
- Making disciples. Jesus' commission applies to every follower (Matthew 28:19–20). See the Great Commission explained.
If you are walking in what God has already revealed, you are already in the centre of much of His will.
Seek First the Kingdom
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
That is Matthew 6:33, ESV, the verse behind everything on this site. When God's kingdom is first, many decisions get simpler. The question changes from "What do I want?" to "What would put His kingdom first here?" For how this plays out at work, see Matthew 6:33 at work.
How to Make a Decision God's Way
- Check it against Scripture. God will not lead you to do what His Word forbids. "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105, ESV).
- Ask for wisdom. "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him" (James 1:5, ESV).
- Trust Him more than your own reasoning. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths" (Proverbs 3:5–6, ESV).
- Seek wise counsel. "Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed" (Proverbs 15:22, ESV). Talk to mature believers, your pastor, and people who know you well.
- Let your mind be renewed. Paul says that as we are transformed by the renewal of our minds, we can "discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect" (Romans 12:2, ESV). Time in the Word shapes your desires.
- Look at your gifts and open doors. What has God equipped you to do? Where are there real opportunities to serve?
- Take the next faithful step. "The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps" (Proverbs 16:9, ESV). Make a plan, hold it humbly, and move.
What If I Choose Wrong?
When two options are both faithful to Scripture and you have prayed and sought counsel, you are often free to choose. God is not hiding His will to trip you up. He is a good Father who is able to redirect you. Many people get stuck waiting for a sign when God has already given them wisdom, counsel, and a next step. Take it, and trust Him with the rest.
Common Questions
How do I know God's will for my life? Start with what Scripture already reveals: love God, love people, live a holy life, give thanks, and make disciples. For specific decisions, seek His kingdom first, ask for wisdom (James 1:5), check your options against the Bible, seek wise counsel, and take the next faithful step.
What does the Bible say about God's will? 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 calls rejoicing, prayer, and thanksgiving God's will for us, 1 Thessalonians 4:3 names our sanctification, and Romans 12:2 says a renewed mind can discern what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Does God have a specific plan for my life? God directs the steps of His people (Proverbs 16:9) and promises to make their paths straight as they trust Him (Proverbs 3:5–6). He usually guides through His Word, wisdom, counsel, and circumstances as you walk with Him.
What if I make the wrong decision? If you have sought God, checked Scripture, and asked for counsel, you can choose in freedom and trust Him to redirect you. God is a good Father, not someone hiding the answer.
Seek first. Take the next step. Trust Him with the rest.
