The short answer: everyone faces temptation, and God promises a way through it. "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13, ESV). To resist temptation: stay close to God in prayer, fill your mind with His Word, avoid the places and patterns that set you up to fall, flee when you need to, walk with other believers, and run back to God quickly when you fail.
Temptation Is Not Sin
Being tempted is not the same as sinning. Jesus Himself was tempted: "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin" (Hebrews 4:15, ESV). Temptation becomes sin when we give in to it.
Where Temptation Comes From
God does not tempt anyone to sin. "Let no one say when he is tempted, 'I am being tempted by God,' for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire" (James 1:13–14, ESV). James shows how it grows: desire leads to sin, and sin leads to death (James 1:15). The earlier you stop it, the easier it is.
How Jesus Resisted
When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He answered each temptation with Scripture. "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God'" (Matthew 4:4, ESV). He did not argue with the tempter or rely on willpower. He stood on what God had said.
7 Ways to Resist Temptation
- Watch and pray. "Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak" (Matthew 26:41, ESV). Pray before you face the moment, not only during it. See how to pray.
- Store up God's Word. "I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you" (Psalm 119:11, ESV). Memorise a few verses that speak to your specific struggle.
- Make no provision. "Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires" (Romans 13:14, ESV). Remove the apps, routes, and situations that make it easy to fall.
- Flee. "So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace" (2 Timothy 2:22, ESV). When Potiphar's wife grabbed Joseph, he ran (Genesis 39:12). Sometimes leaving is the strongest thing you can do.
- Submit to God and resist the devil. "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you" (James 4:7, ESV).
- Walk by the Spirit. "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh" (Galatians 5:16, ESV). See who the Holy Spirit is.
- Do not fight alone. "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed" (James 5:16, ESV). Find one trusted believer who can ask you honest questions.
Look for the Way Out
1 Corinthians 10:13 promises that God will "provide the way of escape." Sometimes it is a door, a phone call, a closed laptop, or a decision to go to bed. When temptation comes, pray, "Lord, show me the way out," and then take it.
When You Fall
Every Christian stumbles. Do not hide, and do not give up. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, ESV). Come back to God quickly. Shame says, "Hide." The gospel says, "Come home." See what repentance means and what grace means.
If a struggle has become an addiction, or involves harm to you or others, it is wise and right to get help from a pastor, a counsellor, or a recovery group. Asking for help is a step of strength, not weakness.
Common Questions
What does the Bible say about temptation? The Bible says temptation is common to everyone, that God is faithful and will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, and that He provides a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13). It also says God tempts no one; temptation comes from our own desires (James 1:13–14).
Is being tempted a sin? No. Jesus was tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15). Temptation becomes sin when we give in to it.
How do I resist temptation? Watch and pray (Matthew 26:41), store up God's Word in your heart (Psalm 119:11), remove what makes it easy to fall (Romans 13:14), flee when needed (2 Timothy 2:22), submit to God and resist the devil (James 4:7), walk by the Spirit, and share your struggle with a trusted believer (James 5:16).
What should I do if I give in to temptation? Confess it to God right away. He is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse you (1 John 1:9). Then talk to a trusted believer, remove what led you there, and keep walking with God.
Watch. Pray. Flee. Come home quickly.
