The Verse We Quote — and Rarely Rest In
I have built brands, businesses, and ministries around one sentence: “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33). It is on our websites. It is in our conversations. It is the name of a movement.
But here is the honest part: I still have to choose it on ordinary Tuesdays. When the inbox is heavy. When a festival still needs volunteers. When a family need shows up at the same time as a ministry need. Anxiety gets loud. The temptation is to seek first the urgent thing — and call it faithfulness.
Jesus Was Talking to Worried People
Read the whole passage. Jesus is not scolding ambitious people. He is comforting anxious ones. “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink… your heavenly Father knows that you need them” (Matthew 6:25–32). The Kingdom is not a prize for people who never feel pressure. It is a refuge for people who do.
Seeking first is not pretending the bills, the kids, or the calling are imaginary. It is refusing to let those things sit on the throne. It is starting the day with the King — Scripture, prayer, obedience in the next small thing — and trusting the Father to add what only He can add.
What “Seek First” Looks Like on a Real Day
- Open the Word before you open the war. Five honest minutes with Scripture will re-order more than an hour of frantic planning.
- Obey the next clear thing. You may not have the five-year plan. You usually have the next phone call, the next meal to pack, the next apology, the next prayer.
- Ask, “Who is this for?” Kingdom-first work still produces excellence. It just refuses to make excellence an idol.
A Promise, Not a Formula
Matthew 6:33 is not a vending machine. God is not obligated to fund every idea we label “ministry.” He is a Father. He knows. He cares. He adds. Sometimes He adds provision. Sometimes He adds peace while we wait. Sometimes He adds people. Always He adds Himself.
If anxiety has been loud this week, you are not failing the mission. You are standing in the exact place Jesus preached this sermon. Seek Him first. The rest is His to carry.
