The Greek Word That Changes How You See Your Week

Oikos (οἶκος) is the New Testament word for "household." Not just the people under your roof, but your whole relational world: family, friends, neighbours, coworkers, the barista who knows your order, the guy you play hockey with. The people who already trust you enough to hear you out.

When Jesus healed the man in Mark 5, He told him, "Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you" (Mark 5:19). When Cornelius believed, his whole household heard the Gospel together (Acts 10). When the Philippian jailer met Jesus, Paul preached to him and all who were in his house (Acts 16:32). Over and over, the Gospel moved along relational lines. It still does.

Why Oikos Is the Most Natural Evangelism Strategy

Most believers think evangelism means talking to strangers. Some of us are called to that, and we love it; twelve years of Friday nights on the streets of Hamilton with Love on Hamilton is proof. But the research and the Scriptures agree: the overwhelming majority of people who come to Jesus do so through someone they already knew.

  • Trust already exists. You do not have to earn a hearing. You have one.
  • Follow-up is built in. You will see them next week whether or not the conversation went well.
  • Your story is credible. They watched you before and after. They know the change is real.
  • It multiplies. Every person you reach has an oikos of their own. That is how a movement grows without a marketing budget.

Paul asked the question in Romans 10:14: how are they to hear without someone preaching? The someone, for the people in your oikos, is you. Nobody else has your access.

How to Map Your Oikos This Week

Here is the simple practice Katie and I have used and taught for years. It takes twenty minutes.

  1. Write down 8 to 15 names. People you see regularly who do not yet follow Jesus, or who have drifted. Do not overthink it. Family, work, neighbourhood, hobbies, school.
  2. Pray for them by name, daily. Ask the Lord of the harvest for open doors, soft hearts, and boldness for you (Colossians 4:3). Prayer is not the warm-up. It is the work.
  3. Notice where God is already moving. A crisis, a question, a comment about church, a hard season. Those are doors. Walk through them with love, not a script.
  4. Serve before you speak. A meal, a ride, showing up at the hospital. 1 John 3:18 says love in deed and truth. Deeds earn the right to truth.
  5. Share your story when it fits. Before Jesus, meeting Jesus, what is changing now. Two minutes, no jargon.
  6. Offer a next step. Coffee to talk more, a Friday night of outreach together, a Jesus Festival gathering, or reading a Gospel side by side.
