What Is the Trinity? A Simple Biblical Explanation — cover image

One God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. What the Bible says about the Trinity, common mistakes to avoid, and why it matters for your faith.

Key takeaways

  • There is one God (Deuteronomy 6:4) who exists eternally as three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  • Each person is fully God and they are distinct persons. Not one person in three masks, not three gods, not thirds of God.
  • The Trinity shows that God is love forever (1 John 4:8), and that salvation and mission are the work of Father, Son, and Spirit.

The short answer: the Trinity is the Christian teaching that there is one God who exists eternally as three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Each person is fully God, the three are not the same person, and there are not three gods. The word "Trinity" is not in the Bible, but the teaching is. Jesus told His followers to baptize "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19, ESV): one name, three persons.

There Is One God

The Bible is clear from beginning to end that there is only one God. "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one" (Deuteronomy 6:4, ESV). Christians are not polytheists. The Trinity does not add gods. It describes the one God as He has revealed Himself.

The Father Is God

Jesus taught us to pray "Our Father in heaven" (Matthew 6:9, ESV), and the apostles called Him "God the Father" again and again (for example, 1 Peter 1:2).

The Son Is God

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

That is John 1:1, ESV. A few verses later John says, "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us" (John 1:14, ESV). The Word is Jesus. He was "with God" (distinct from the Father) and "was God" (fully divine). Jesus said, "I and the Father are one" (John 10:30, ESV).

The Holy Spirit Is God

When Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit, Peter said, "You have not lied to man but to God" (Acts 5:4, ESV). The Spirit is a person who teaches, helps, and can be grieved (John 14:26, Ephesians 4:30). See who the Holy Spirit is.

Three Persons Together

Several passages show all three persons at once:

  • Jesus' baptism. The Son is baptized, the Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father speaks from heaven: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:16–17, ESV).
  • The Great Commission. Baptize "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19, ESV).
  • A blessing. "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all" (2 Corinthians 13:14, ESV).
  • The Helper. Jesus said the Spirit is the one "whom I will send to you from the Father" (John 15:26, ESV).

Common Mistakes

  • One person wearing three masks. The idea that God is one person who sometimes appears as Father, sometimes as Son, and sometimes as Spirit does not fit Scripture. At Jesus' baptism all three are present at once, and Jesus prays to the Father.
  • Three separate gods. The Bible insists there is one God (Deuteronomy 6:4). The three persons share one divine nature.
  • Thirds of God. Each person is not one-third of God. Each is fully God.

Everyday comparisons, like water as ice, liquid, and steam, or an egg's shell, white, and yolk, all fall short and usually slide into one of these mistakes. It is better to say what Scripture says and accept that God is greater than our analogies.

Why the Trinity Matters

  • It is who God is. We worship God as He has revealed Himself, not as we would design Him.
  • God is love, forever. "God is love" (1 John 4:8, ESV). Before creation, the Father, Son, and Spirit loved one another. God did not need to create us to have someone to love.
  • Salvation is the work of all three. The Father sends the Son, the Son gives His life, and the Spirit brings new birth and lives in believers (1 Peter 1:2, Titus 3:5–6).
  • Prayer makes sense. We pray to the Father, through the Son, by the Spirit.
  • It shapes the mission. We are sent by the Father, in the name of the Son, in the power of the Spirit (John 20:21–22, Acts 1:8).

Christians have confessed this teaching from the early church onward, including in the Nicene Creed, written in the fourth century.

Common Questions

What is the Trinity in simple terms? The Trinity means there is one God who exists eternally as three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Each is fully God, they are distinct persons, and there are not three gods (Deuteronomy 6:4, Matthew 28:19).

Is the Trinity in the Bible? The word "Trinity" is not in the Bible, but the teaching is. Scripture says there is one God (Deuteronomy 6:4), calls the Father, the Son (John 1:1), and the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:4) God, and shows them together at Jesus' baptism (Matthew 3:16–17) and in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19).

Do Christians believe in three gods? No. Christians believe in one God (Deuteronomy 6:4) who exists as three persons. The three persons share one divine nature and are not separate gods.

Why does the Trinity matter? It is who God has revealed Himself to be. It shows that God is love eternally (1 John 4:8), that salvation is the work of the Father, Son, and Spirit together, and that we pray to the Father, through the Son, by the Spirit.
