The Harvest Has a Lord
Jesus did not start with a strategy deck. He started with a command to ask: “Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.” (Matthew 9:38). If we skip that and go straight to sandwiches, we are still being kind — we are just being kind without the King.
Prayer is not the warm-up for ministry. Prayer is ministry. The street, the park, the festival lawn — those are where the answers walk around on two feet.
A Simple Way to Pray Before You Go
- Name the streets. Not “Hamilton.” King Street. The park. The corner you keep walking past. Specific love is harder to fake.
- Name the people. First names if you have them. Faces if you don’t. Ask God to remember them even when the city forgets.
- Pray for workers. Matthew 9:38 is not only “send me.” It is “send us.” Ask for partners, for courage, for the person who will come next Friday.
- Pray for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1–4). Mayors, police, landlords, outreach coordinators. Peace in a city is not a luxury for the Gospel — it is often the soil.
- Ask for open doors and restrained evil. Colossians 4:3. You are not naive. You are commissioned.
- Surrender the outcome. You are not the Saviour. You are a witness. Some plant, some water, God gives the growth (1 Corinthians 3:6–7).
Then Put Your Shoes On
Prayer that never leaves the living room is incomplete. Going that never knelt is dangerous. We do both: we ask, then we walk. That is the rhythm behind Love on Hamilton Friday nights and the reason we wrote the Outreach Group Starter Kit.
