What Is Worship? Meaning in the Bible — cover image

Worship is giving God the honour He deserves with your whole life, not just songs on Sunday. What worship means in the Bible and how to worship every day.

Key takeaways

  • Worship is giving God the honour, love, and obedience He deserves. It includes singing, but Romans 12:1 makes it a whole life.
  • True worship is in spirit and truth (John 4:23–24): from the heart, by the Spirit, shaped by who God really is.
  • Worship is a witness. When Jesus is lifted up in public, people who would never enter a church hear the gospel (John 12:32).

The short answer: worship is giving God the honour, love, and obedience He deserves, because of who He is and what He has done. It includes singing and prayer, but it is bigger than music. "Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship" (Romans 12:1, ESV). True worship is "in spirit and truth" (John 4:24), centres on Jesus, and reaches into every part of life.

What Does Worship Mean?

The most common words for worship in the Bible picture bowing down: recognising that God is God and we are not. "Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!" (Psalm 95:6, ESV). Worship says, "You are worthy." In heaven the cry is, "Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things" (Revelation 4:11, ESV).

Worship in Spirit and Truth

But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

That is John 4:23–24, ESV. Jesus said this to a woman at a well who wanted to argue about the right place to worship. His answer: it is not mainly about a place. It is about the heart (spirit) and about who God really is (truth). Worship that is all feeling and no truth drifts. Worship that is all truth and no heart goes cold. God seeks both.

Worship Is a Whole Life

"I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship" (Romans 12:1, ESV). Worship happens at work, at home, and on the street. "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31, ESV). See Matthew 6:33 at work.

Ways the Bible Shows Us to Worship

  • Singing. "Singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God" (Colossians 3:16, ESV).
  • Praise and thanks. "Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name" (Hebrews 13:15, ESV).
  • Prayer. Talking with God is worship. See how to pray.
  • Hearing and obeying His Word. "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly" (Colossians 3:16, ESV).
  • Giving. Honouring God with what He has given you is worship (Proverbs 3:9).
  • Serving others. Love in action is an offering to God (Hebrews 13:16).
  • Gathering with His people. Worship is personal, but it is never meant to be only private. See how to find a good church.

Worship Is a Witness

When God's people worship, others notice. "About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them" (Acts 16:25, ESV). David wrote, "He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD" (Psalm 40:3, ESV).

That is why we take worship into public parks. When Jesus is lifted up in the open, people who would never walk into a church building hear the gospel. "And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself" (John 12:32, ESV). See why we take worship into the park and how to bring a Jesus Festival to your city.

How to Worship This Week

  • Start the day with praise. Before requests, tell God who He is.
  • Sing, even alone. Put on a worship song and sing it to God, not just along with it.
  • Read a Psalm out loud. Psalms 95 to 100 are full of worship.
  • Turn your work into an offering. Do one ordinary task today "as for the Lord" (Colossians 3:23).
  • Thank Him for three specific things.
  • Worship with others. Gather with your church this week and come ready to give, not just receive.
  • Let it overflow. Tell someone what God has done for you.

Common Questions

What is worship in the Bible? Worship is giving God the honour, love, and obedience He deserves. It includes singing, praise, and prayer, but Romans 12:1 says offering your whole life to God is your spiritual worship.

What does it mean to worship in spirit and truth? Jesus said true worshipers worship the Father in spirit and truth (John 4:23–24). It means worship from the heart, by the Holy Spirit, that is shaped by the truth of who God really is in His Word and in Jesus.

Is worship just singing? No. Singing is an important part of worship (Colossians 3:16), but worship also includes prayer, hearing and obeying God's Word, giving, serving others, and doing everything for God's glory (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Why worship God in public? Public worship is a witness. When Paul and Silas sang in prison, the other prisoners listened (Acts 16:25), and Psalm 40:3 says many will see and put their trust in the Lord. Lifting Jesus up in the open lets people hear the gospel who might never enter a church.

He is worthy. Lift Him up, everywhere.
