You Do Not Need to Be Impressive. You Need to Show Up.
Most people who join a Love on Hamilton Friday are not “street ministry professionals.” They are ordinary believers who were willing to be a little uncomfortable for the sake of love. If that is you, you belong.
Katie and I have done this for over twelve years. The first night is always the loudest in your head. After that, the street becomes a classroom and the people become names.
Before You Come
- Pray. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers and to go ahead of you (Matthew 9:38).
- Wear the weather. Hamilton Fridays happen rain or shine. Layers, decent shoes, a jacket you can give away if the Spirit says so.
- Charge your phone. Not for scrolling. For maps, a teammate, and remembering a name.
- Come with someone if you can. Jesus sent them two by two (Luke 10:1). Wisdom and courage travel better in pairs.
What the Night Usually Looks Like
- A short prayer before you pack or walk.
- Simple supplies — meals, water, socks in winter. The team usually has extras. Do not over-kit.
- Conversations, not a pitch. “Hi, I’m ___ — would you like something to eat?” Then: “How can I pray for you?”
- A debrief: what happened, who needs follow-up, what we will pray for this week.
Common Questions
What if I freeze? Stay near a teammate. Listen more than you talk. Presence preaches.
Is it safe? We stay in lit public areas, go in pairs, and use wisdom. Love and respect have opened far more doors than they have closed.
What if someone says no? Honour it. You were faithful. The next conversation is still coming.
Want the longer field guide? Read the Friday night rhythm and how to start in your city. New groups start with the starter kit.
Show up once. Then come back. That is how a city gets loved.
